Abstract

Near Lake Sindor in the Komi Autonomous Republic, a multi-period settlement, with an adjacent peat-filled oxbow, was excavated. In the peat bog hundreds of wooden artifacts were found, including fishing gear. A series of hooks were used for angling for pike. Net equipment includes a measuring stick for making net and loops of twigs for attaching nets. In addition, the remains of four weirs crossing the peat bog were discovered. They consisted of numerous cut young conifers and stakes. These structures are similar to the ancient tidal Boston Fish Weirs (USA). Also found were splashing sticks, used to frighten the fish and drive them into nets or weirs.
