Abstract

Fish were collected from 18 Neuse River tributary stations that varied in salinity from freshwater to 12.25‰. More freshwater than salt-water species were collected in salinities of less than 3.50‰. Freshwater fishes outnumbered salt-water and brackish-water individuals up to salinities of 2.63‰. Freshwater game fishes were found in higher percentages in collections from stations with 1.75 to 3.50‰ salinities than in those from freshwater stations. Few freshwater fishes were found in salinities greater than 10.50‰. Freshwater game fishes were not abundant in salinities above 3.50‰.
