Abstract

The Fischer reaction was used to synthesize 11-oxo-indole- and 11-oxo-Cl-indole derivatives of fusidic acid benzyl ester which are promising antimicrobial agents. It was found that the reaction of 3,11-diketo-benzylfusidate with phenylhydrazines proceeds chemoselectively and provides 2,3-fused indoles, whilst the 11-keto function does not undergo the cyclization.
