Abstract

Maria Markantonatou’s “Fiscal Discipline through Internal Devaluation and Discourses of Rent-Seeking: The Case of the Crisis in Greece” surveys the steps taken to manage the crisis and offers a systematic critique of mainstream diagnoses about a rent-seeking-based economy and society and excess wages and labour rights that justified shock therapy in Greece. Her paper provides an excellent overview of the social and political consequences of the Greek crisis, and points to the deepening of neoliberalization within the European Union.
