Abstract

Abstract Let us consider a planar interface between two pure liquid and solid phases at thermodynamic equilibrium. The change in thermodynamic potential is written as increase, which can be achieved by moving the interface from the solid to the liquid phase. Let us now consider a stable liquid phase while progressively decreasing the temperature. As soon as phase transition is a first-order one, liquid–solid interfaces must be present for the solid phase to spread.
