Abstract

An important and historical step in the treatment and nursing of mental disorders was reported in the BJN100 years ago. Up to this time there was no special hospital in London for the treatment of patients with mental health problems. Sufferers from such conditions were sent out to the country to be cared for in ‘county asylums’, which tended to be long-stay facilities rather than acute psychiatric hospitals. Many acute cases were left until their condition got worse and they were certified insane! Therefore, when Dr Henry Maudsley announced he had made an offer of £30 000 towards establishing a hospital for mental diseases within the city it was greeted not only with enthusiasm from the London County Council but by the medical and nursing professions as an important and significant step.
