Abstract

Preparations are being made at the Kennedy Space Center for installation of the first payload to be carried into space aboard the space shuttle Columbia during STS‐2, its second test flight, now scheduled for this fall.The payload is called OSTA‐1 for NASA's Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications, which is providing most of the seven experiments. It is designed to demonstrate the space shuttle's capability as an operational space platform for scientific and applications research. The experiments are concerned primarily with remote sensing of land resources, atmospheric phenomena and ocean conditions.
