Abstract

In April 2007 Leaky Heaven began work on a new piece, inspired by a survivor’s account of the 1816 sinking of the French naval frigate Medusa and Géricault’s subsequent painting depicting the raft-borne survivors. Looking to bring in new perspectives to the process, and with the support of the Playwrights Theatre Centre, we drafted Heidi Taylor as production dramaturg to follow the development of the piece through three iterations and over the course of a year. Heidi brought in a fresh set of eyes and was able to describe back to us the methods that we had developed; she also generously offered her own inventions and structures and brought along an acute sense of organization — something vital in the chaotic binge of creation.
