Abstract

Due to the availability of industrially produced formula diets some ten years ago, enteral feeding has gained substantial importance in the treatment of various diseases and is more frequently integrated into outpatient treatment. The feeding solutions were primarily administered via a naso-gastric or naso-jejunal tube. This route is associated with the possible disadvantages of irritating the nasopharyngeal space and the fact that the tube is clearly visible. The latter resulted in poor social contacts and psychological loneliness.
