Abstract

The first (preliminary) results on the anisotropy of the quasi-elastic neutron scattering signal from atomic hopping (phasons) in quasicrystals are presented. The results taken with a triple-axis spectrometer at various Q-vectors with a modulus of 2.85 Å −1 in a plane perpendicular to a twofold axis show that the intensity is less along the fivefold axis. This suggests that the jumps observed occur along a twofold or a threefold axis.
