Abstract

The first tests carried out on the 1000 kW solar furnace were conducted with an oxidizing atmosphere at the focus. The conditions of treatment were as follows: 1. (a) Direct treatment of the material supported by the material itself or treatment on cooled support. 2. (b) Treatment in a cavity: either fixed or revolving (“centrifugal furnace”). The above conditions were applied to melt various refractory materials: oxides of thorium, zirconium, calcium, aluminum, chromium and various compounds formed with these oxides. The efficiencies of treatment were determined. Heat treatment on cooled supports was studied extensively, primarily to obtain refractory materials, solidified in the form of spheres of very small diameters.
