Abstract

SummaryThis is the first report and characterization ofBursaphelenchus sexdentatiand the first official report of the presence of the genusBursaphelenchusin Israel. This species was isolated fromOrthotomicus erosus(Coleoptera: Scolytinae) found onPinus halepensisin the Judean foothills in Israel. Nematodes collected from insect galleries were reared on fungal cultures and identified based on morphological diagnostic characters for the genusBursaphelenchus. Sequencing analyses of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region, small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) of ribosomalDNAconfirmed the identification of this nematode species collected from wood and directly from the insect body.
