Abstract

Strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa) cv. Festival showing root rot symptoms were observed in a poly-house located in Meghalaya, India in May 2017 and submitted to our laboratory to determine the disease causal organism. Initial symptoms were mild wilting, root rot and necrosis and plants completely dried with time (Fig. 1). Around 10% of the plants exhibited symptoms in the poly-house (plants grown under hydroponics system using cocopeat). Isolations were done from infected roots using PDA amended with 50 mg/l of Chloramphenicol. Rhizoctonia-like fungal colonies developed from symptomatic tissue after 24 h. Microscopic examination of pure cultures obtained using hyphal tipping showed morphological characters to belong to the Rhizoctonia genus (Sneh et al. 1991). The hyphal diameter was 4-5 µm. Monilioid cells were detected on the 8th day, but formation of sclerotia did not occur even after a month. On the basis of nuclear staining using Safranin O this species could be identified to be a binucleate Rhi...
