Abstract

INTRODUCTIONPARATYPHOID infections in turkeys constitute a real economic problem in the turkey industry because of their high mortality and the great retardation of growth in the surviving birds. At least 62 of the 200 Salmonella types reported from animals (including man), have been found in turkeys. It is to be expected that an increasing number of serotypes will be identified in turkeys as better laboratory facilities are developed and as cooperation increases between field and laboratory. Reported in this paper is identification of Salmonella reading as a new type in turkeys. HISTORYKauffman (1941) reports that Salmonella reading was first isolated in 1916 by Schütze from a water supply in Reading, England, and reported in the literature in 1920. Since then, it has been isolated on numerous occasions from cases of human gastroenteritis, some fatal.
