Abstract

Amphitricia flachi (Brenske, 1892) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Rhizotrogini) is an emerging insect pest of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) in the Philippines. The larva of this pest feeds on the roots of cacao, and the adult emerges from the root, as evidenced by an exit hole near the base of the tree, thereby causing significant damage and eventually death to the tree. The pest was monitored from different cacao plantations in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija; Bani, Pangasinan; Sariaya, Quezon; and Tuy, Batangas. The feeding damage of the beetle is characterized, and some integrated pest management considerations were reviewed.
