Abstract
The family Dryopidae (long‐toed water beetles) contains 263 described species belonging to 32 genera worldwide. The genus Elmomorphus includes E. brevicornis amamiensis, E. brevicornis brevicornis, E. montanus, and E. nepalensis which are distributed in the Palaearctic region. Adults of this genus can be distinguished from other genera by the following characters: elongate, oval and shiny body with sparse pubescence, short antennae, two wider antennomere, absence of carinae on pronotum, row of long strong setae on middle femurs, and very long tarsi. They are found on the pile of submerged decayed branches (Prunus sp.) in lentic areas. Larvae are little known, and adults may be herbivorous and utilize plastron respiration similar to elmid riffle beetles. In this study, we recorded Elmomorphus brevicornis Sharp as new to the Korean water beetle fauna using material collected in Byeonsanbando National Park. This is also the first record of the family Dryopidae in Korea. Diagnoses, photographs, line drawings of key characters, and biological notes are provided.
