Abstract

This little book is welcome for its good humour and good sense. Professor Black gracefully skirts the usual pitfalls of a “how to” manual by remaining resolutely undogmatic. “The rightway to direct.” he tells us. “is the wav that works for each director in the given situation.” Even so, the very structure of the book tactfully advises the would-be director to start at the beginning and proceed, via the middle , for as long as possible. In passing, Professor Black is generous with helpful hints , often in the form of anecdote. My favourite is the observation, courtesy of Luther Adler, that you can’t make pineapples out of shit.
