Abstract

Kurt Schneider's first rank symptoms of schizophrenia have been defined and described. Part I describes the frequency of first rank symptoms, on admission to one mental hospital during a period of eight months, in all the patients who were diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. Of these 166 patients, 119 had first rank symptoms. The patients without first rank symptoms had been ill significantly longer and had more admissions to mental hospitals. Part II describes, in 173 schizophrenics with first rank symptoms, the differences between individual symptoms in their frequencies, and their associations with other symptoms.
