Abstract

AbstractThe present paper reports the first ply failure study of composite laminate corner point supported skew plates under uniform transversely applied pressure. An eight-noded isoparametric curved quadratic shell element along with the first-order shear deformation theory is used to develop the present finite element code. The first ply failure loads are assessed invoking a variety of well-known failure criteria including the Puck’s and Hashin’s ones. Variation of failure loads for different skew angles is studied, and governing failure criteria predicting the minimum failure loads are reported. To assist practising engineers in analysis of the first ply failure load of laminated composite skew plates, working formulae are proposed.KeywordsFirst ply failureSkew plate geometryCorner point supportWorking equations
