Abstract

In this paper, the first order absorbing boundary condition (ABC) is implemented to numerically close a large-domain finite element method (FEM) in open-region (e.g., antenna and scattering) problems in electromagnetics. The FEM is based on large curvilinear Lagrange-type volume elements with higher order hierarchical polynomial vector basis functions. The validity and convergence properties of the FEM-ABC computational technique are evaluated and demonstrated in a characteristic example of a dielectric scatterer with pronounced curvature.
