Abstract

A successful classroom experience is the goal of every instructor. Setting the tone, on the first day of class, is a well-known pedagogical technique. By setting the tone, the instructor gives students cues for expectations, attitudes, motivation, behavior, and learning. But, how do librarians who teach information technology or library instruction for a single class period take advantage of setting the tone to ensure a successful learning experience for the students? Librarians will have to set the tone in the first five minutes of the class. This article discusses the issues involved with setting the tone for a library instruction session.
