Abstract

ABSTRACT Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has received attention for utilizing the social media platform Instagram to connect with her audience. This paper applies Kenneth Burke’s pentadic analysis to Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram stories as she communicates the transition process into Congress. I argue that there are competing ratios that frame her message: scene-agent and agent-scene. This paper attempts to extend scholarship by expanding pentadic criticism to include dueling ratios within one pentad as well as a secondary agent as crucial to Ocasio-Cortez’s agent-scene ratio.
