Abstract

Abstract Burns and fires are surpassed only by motor vehicle crashes, falls and drownings as a cause of unintentional injury death. In recent years, they have caused about 5,000 deaths annually. This figure does not include deaths related to arson or suspicious circumstances, estimated at about 300 annually, and about 150 burn deaths of suicidal intent (Table 12-1). Deaths associated with postcrash fires are counted among deaths from motor vehicle and airplane crashes.
