Abstract
The low-power, low-cost multifunctional nodes are interconnected so that they can collect and send data to the sink or BS which is referred to as wireless sensor network (WSN). For enhancing the lifetime of network, we propose a firefly optimization based Hierarchical Clustering Algorithm (FOHCA) in WSNs. Clustering and clustering head selection are done by using firefly optimization algorithm with respect to minimize the power consumption in WSN. This work proposes FOHCA as it proves to be better in comparison to other optimization methods such as Genetic Algorithms. Firefly optimization makes implementation easy on software or hardware. It has capability of escaping from local optima and it provides high-quality solutions. FOHCA also promotes the optimization of the CH. This algorithm improves the network lifetime. It also reduces the energy utilization. The results show that in comparison to other methods, the proposed method gives better results.
