Abstract

Abstract “Firebrand” focuses on the experience of being different and the struggles individuals face in coping with family, social, and political encroachments on identity and selfhood. “Firebrand” explores a series of challenging events and activities in my own life that evoked in me a determination to stay on the path of my own sense of meaning and truth even though I was being threatened by people in positions of power and by attempts to block, control, and restrain me. Firebrand is an affirmation of what it means to be an alive and unique human being, to maintain an authentic presence and moral values while also struggling to be personally, socially, and politically effective.
