Abstract

Abstract This introduction provides an overview of the plan and layout for the volume, including summaries of the chapters that address a wide variety of firearms technology, regulation, and development throughout U.S. history. Historical work has long played a prominent role in scholarly and legal debates about the interplay between gun rights and regulation, especially since the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. The Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which mandates an exclusively historical test for Second Amendment claims, raises the importance of this type of new historical evidence. The voices of a wide range of methodologically diverse scholars help to showcase how much context matters in understanding the scope of historical firearms regulation.
