Abstract

Reinforced concrete slabs are sensitive structural concrete elements to the effects of fire. This paper investigates the fire resistance of reinforced concrete slabs exposed to a standard fire using the simplified calculation mehods in the Eurocodes. The effects of tension reinforcement ratio, concrete cover, and concrete strength on the fire resistance of reinforced concrete slabs are assessed. The results show that the fire resistance of reinforced concrete slabs increases as the tension reinforcement ratio increases. The increase in concrete cover also improves the fire resistance of slabs, but up to a certain point where the decrease in the effective depth of cross-section becomes significant, the fire resistance of reinforced concrete slabs will be reduced. Meanwhile, high concrete strength slightly improves the fire resistance of reinforced concrete slabs.
