Abstract

SYNOPSIS Four basic fire management options for fynbos in the mountain catchment areas of the Cape Province are outlined (scheduled block burning, two-phase block burning, adaptive interference fire management, natural fire zone management). Constraints on fire management affecting the choice of any particular option are discussed. The most important factors influencing fire management are management objectives, ecological considerations, fire hazard and invader plant control considerations. It is contended that a broader perspective on possible fire management options provide more scope to cope with prevailing constraints than restriction to the traditional scheduled block burning system.
