Abstract
Using Schwinger's proper-time method and the Balian-Bloch multiple-reflection expansion of Green's functions, we calculate the rate of pair production in a uniform electric field confined to a limited volume in space. In addition to Schwinger's volume term the method provides a surface term whose expression is given in closed form.
