Abstract

Finite-range calculations indicate that deutron channel coupling contributes a much weaker repulsive contribution to the proton optical potential in contrast to zero-range calculations which indicate strong repulsion. Finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations and an accurate inversion procedure are used to explain this in more detail and it is shown that finite range corrections quench the repulsion at the nuclear centre, but the overall repulsive effect remains substantial.
