Abstract

The equilibrium conical shell equations are formulated and solved by the finite element method. Since for two-dimensional equations the method of solution is restricted to second order equations, it is necessary to solve nine simultaneous equations, which is cumbersome. For torsion without bending this system is simplified to two simultaneous displacement equations, which are readily solved. The solution is in exact agreement with the analytical solution for simplified geometry. Torsional deflection is a key factor to explain the directional pumping of lip seals in some modern theories.
