Abstract

The finite-element method is used to study the effect of various parameters on the groundwater flow field around a hypothetical radioactive waste depository in hard rock. From the flow field water transport times are calculated. It is shown that major fault zones in the vicinity of a depository have a substantial effect on water transport times; in some cases this may be advantageous. The effect of the natural geothermal gradient on water viscosity at depth is shown to be significant. A permeability decrease with depth is shown to have a marked effect on water transport times. The effects on water flow of depository heat output are also considered.
