Abstract

<b><sc>Abstract.</sc></b> The onset of biomass flow has been successfully predicted using a finite element model that combines fundamental mechanical properties determined with a Cubical Triaxial Tester (CTT) and a continuum material models, i.e., Mohr-Coulomb, Drucker-Prager, and modified Cam-Clay models. However, it is not straightforward to model and simulate the post-incipient biomass flow pattern due to the nature of continuum scale constitutive material models. This study investigates the use of damage initiation, i.e., the onset of flow, and an evolution model to predict post-incipient biomass flow behavior with a finite element model. Results of conventional triaxial compression tests using the Forest Concepts True Cubical Triaxial Tester provide an axial strain history during engineering shear allowing unambiguous determination of necessary modeling parameters. This study highlights the versatility of Forest Concepts True Cubical Triaxial Tester to produce useful engineering data.
