Abstract
The Finite Element software, ABAQUS® together with subroutine codes written in FORTRAN is used to fully couple the mass diffusion – displacement analysis of hydrogen redistribution and hydride precipitation in a stress gradient. Since the redistribution of hydrogen in solid solution is driven by gradients in H concentration, stress, and temperature, two different precipitation models were investigated in specimens subjected to such gradients, and the results validated against available experimental data and analytical solutions where applicable. Simulation results obtained with the new Hydride Nucleation Growth and Dissolution (HNGD) model that considers growth in the hysteresis region show closer agreement with experimental observations, signifying that the previous hydride precipitation model may be underestimating the amount of hydride precipitation.
