Abstract

A new point of view based on a finite element formulation for solving Maxwell's equations in the time domain is presented to deal with grid refinements in FDTD. The formulation allows the coupling of non-conforming structured or unstructured meshes. As a special case, it can advantageously derive stable space–time subgridding schemes in FDTD. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency and the validity of the technique. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
