Abstract

Abstract : A study was made of crack initiation due to localized creep action for a nickel-base superalloy RENE 95. Crack initiation times of single-edge-notched specimens and circumferentially notched axisymmetric specimens were determined experimentally under constant loads and a given elevated temperature. Corresponding finite element analyses using assumed stress hybrid elements were made to determine the stress and strain histories up to the crack initiation times. Through the study of specimens with notches of different geometries at different loading levels a large range of stress and strain parameters were covered. It has been found that the only parameter that falls on a narrow band when plotted against the initiation time is the magnitude of maximum equivalent stress at the time of crack initiation.
