Abstract

Finite element analysis is performed to predict the stress distributions within a water-filled horizontal vessel with hemispherical ends and two or three saddle supports. Computations are performed for various values of design parameters. The wall thickness was varied from 0.5 to 70 mm; the vessel length from 10 to 30 m; and the vessel radius from 0.5 to 2.0 m. The effects of the pressure and a third saddle support are also investigated. The maximum tensile and shear stresses are compared with the predictions of Zick's analysis. Design correlations are obtained, based on the numerical results.
