Abstract

Thermal stratification dominates the physical circulation and biochemical variable distribution in Lake Erie during the summer period. The Central Basin hypolimnion is often depleted of oxygen because of strong sediment oxygen demand. The water circulation and temperature can be computed by using the two dimensional x-z momentum and energy conservation equations. Results from a finite element model using mixed interpolation basis functions showed that oxygen replenishment from the Eastern Basin depends on favourable westerly winds, but not so much on the earth’s rotational effect.
