Abstract

A finite element analysis of the process of slow crack growth is made for center-cracked specimens subjected to monotonically increasing load until the point of fast fracture is reached. The formulation is based on an incremental theory of plasticity with isotropic hardening. Numerical results and experimental data are compared. The need and the source of the governing equation for crack growth are discussed.
