Abstract

An elastic finite element analysis has been carried out on the steam inlet nozzle of a spray water desuperheater installed on the steam bypass system of a 500 MW(e) turbine/generator at Loy Yang A Power Station. To minimise thermal loads, a thermal sleeve has been provided to protect the nozzle/vessel connection. Examination of plant thermocouple data indicates that high stresses may arise at two operating conditions, both considered to be more arduous than the conditions considered at the design phase. The two conditions were modelled using the BERSAFE finite element package. An axisymmetric and a three-dimensional analysis were performed for both conditions to assess the accuracy of the axisymmetric approximation. This provides a reference for the use of axisymmetric analysis alone for similar cases in the future. In addition, the effect of mesh density was investigated in the axisymmetric analysis.
