Abstract

The current performance of a transonic axial compressor can be improved by modifying the design of the compressor hub spinner. The shape of the hub spinner will be changed to provide better inlet flow conditions to the compressor. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is used first to determine the baseline rotor system characteristics, and then to analyze these characteristics for the proposed redesign. Results from this analysis are used to verify that the compressor hub spinner redesign has positive margins of safety, and therefore, satisfies good engineering design practices.
