Abstract

For the poor quality of the finger vein image, an improved finger vein image enhancement method is presented based on both fuzzy sets and oriented filters. In order to improve the image contrast and extract finger vein features effectively, we first use a novel fuzzy algorithm to remove the ambiguity of a poor-quality finger vein image and then apply the mask method to calculate the orientation field. After that, we construct a new group of oriented filters to filter the finger vein image. Finally, the filtered image is segmented and then is noisily removed. Our experimental results show that the extracted finger vein features are of continuity, smoothness, less noise and pseudo-vein characteristics.
