Abstract
A good many years ago a friend of mine, David Park the painter, showed me how to multiply small numbers (6 through 10) on my fingers. I was fascinated: “Where did you learn that?” He said, “A friend of mine who greatly admired the Romans travelled through the Balkans looking for traces of the old Roman civilization. and this was one of the customs he found among the peasants.”
