Abstract

PREVIOUSLY, investigations of sectioned material have provided extremely valuable information regarding the ultrafine structure of keratin1,2. However, little if any information has been forthcoming regarding the axial organization of the microfibril. This, in part, may be attributed to the large depth of focus of the electron microscope coupled with the fact that a longitudinal section consists of several layers of microfibrils. Such limitations therefore force one to adopt alternative techniques in the study of structures at the molecular level.
