Abstract

Approximate formulas, derived by use of Gora's asymptotic method, are given for rigid asymmetric rotor eigenvalues in the regions where they are degenerate in either K a or K c . The formulas are used to describe the various ways in which a resolved (or resolvable) rotational fine structure in the electronic spectra of larger molecules can arise. The formation of fine structures in the spectra of planar or near-planar molecules (such that the inertial defect, Δ, is much less than I C ) is examined in detail.
