Abstract

The appropriate evaluation of thyroid nodules has been well established for many years. A complete history and physical should be pursued, including questions regarding exposure to head or neck irradiation, familial history of thyroid disorders or endocrine neoplasias, or other markers indicating a high risk for thyroid malignancy. This should be followed with laboratory evaluation of thyroid function and ultrasound of the thyroid for evaluation of size and imaging characteristics as well as other anatomic abnormalities (vascular anomalies, lymphadenopathy).
