Abstract

The world's fine chemicals industry put its wares and its expertise on display in Milan, Italy, last month for this year's Conference on Pharmaceutical Ingredients (CPhI). The industry has been adjusting to a recent wave of mergers, acquisitions, and alliances, and these events were reflected in the offerings on the exposition floor and in the lecture halls for the technical sessions. Companies introduced new intermediates in their catalogs and unveiled new technologies for producing chemicals to special order. Part of the energetic atmosphere of CPhI comes from participants who do not lay out money for a booth but who do business on the fly on the expo floor. In one such encounter, Jan Ramakers, who runs the Jan Ramakers Fine Chemical Consulting Group out of East Linton, Scotland, passed to C&EN his ranking of fine chemicals firms according to sales to the drug and agrochemical industries.
