Abstract
AbstractThe licence to erect Basing House was granted in 1531, occupation started c. 1540-50 and ended after the Sieges of 1642 to 1645 when the House was gutted by fire after the final storming in October 1645. The excavations carried out between c. 1875 and c. 1908 revealed many artifacts including a variety of metal objects, vessel and bottle glass, clay tobacco pipes and the largest of the groups, the ceramic material which includes White and Red local wares, Tudor Green type wares, Metropolitan and local slipwares and a large important group of delftwares. Imported ceramics included some of the delftware, Chinese, North Netherlands, Italian and French wares and Dutch tiles. Some of the glass bottle evidence relates to the continued use of the site as a brick quarry. * A List of Abbreviations to those works most frequently cited in footnotes is on p. 91.
