Abstract

This chapter describes the evolution of a group Analytic training in Rwanda, East Africa. The author considers the applicability of group analysis to a society, where there are high levels of mutual support but also clear expectations of leadership and a didactic approach to learning. The chapter examines the extent to which extreme trauma and socio-cultural norms shape what can be articulated and looks in particular at indirect communication and the use of proverbs. The usefulness of a simplistic mind-body distinction is questioned and in addition it is suggested that open communication is a more ambiguous concept than is commonly assumed.
