Abstract

The determination of overall, incremental, periodical, and break-even stripping ratios in mine sections are commonly the important variables considered in open pit mining design. Several methods are used to determine the stripping ratios in sections. This paper introduces a 'mathematical path' and uses 0–1 matrices in order to calculate stripping ratios. The proposed method can be used in one of two ways: (i) manual calculation of the stripping ratio that is important in field works; and (ii) use of computer facilities when there are too blocks in each section. The procedure introduced in this work is based upon the slanted and zigzag path in different matrices, which can be readily used in place of 'dynamic programming'.
